Computers, science, and math. That’s how it goes. Admissions for most high schools tend to be pretty narrow, and that can be stressful because you have a finite amount of time to dedicate to a particular subject. Dr. Munirah Saifuddin is working to transform how high school students view STEM. “I love electronics. I think computers, robotics, and electronics is what I was born to do,” said Saifuddin, an AAPI nonprofit student at Torrance High School. “I want to inspire as many students as I can to consider a career in this field.” As an Engineering and Aerospace Cadet (EAC) student at Torrance High School (THS), Saifuddin is part of a program that provides experiential training in aerospace engineering through the live-fly-lab program. Over the course of the semester, EAC students, members of the working community, and THS faculty work to build and fly a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), a type of small unmanned aerial vehicle or drone. Using the engineering principles of design, planning, and execution, the drones are programmed to explore the world beyond the classroom walls. The drones that EAC students build are different from typical drones because they are smaller and more powerful, with the ability to fly autonomously, return to a pre-determined point, and communicate with the student and THS staff. These drones are an important part of this program because the UAV gives the students the opportunity to safely practice the engineering basics of design, planning, and execution while working within the constraints of real-world aerospace engineering. All of THS’ 11 EAC faculty members are trained engineers who have a common interest in providing the students with a realistic grasp of the aerospace industry. The EAC students work with the instructors in the building blocks of engineering: design, planning, and execution. EAC students use the “design 648931e174
